CT4ANIPR - Character Modeling

University of Portsmouth - Animation Yr. 1 - Animation Production

I began this project by gathering reference material for my character.
I used both the original illustration by Jonny Duddle but also a 3D model that I found online.

The 3D model helped me see some of the details better and also helped me in planning the production. After the research I started making concept drawings:

Even though the brief advised us to work in low-poly I considered that the model needs to be quite complex to stay true to the original. In the early versions I tried to just get the overall shapes right, and towards the finish I added lots of small details.

The texturing was a big problem because I couldn't get them working just in Photoshop. Therefore I learned how to use Mudbox. In Mudbox I painted the textures and then I exported the diffuse.

The rig is fairly complex. Besides the fact that I added controllers for each bone, I also made a reverse foot lock system. That was a good decision because it later helped me with my animation.
